Ozma, so silent until now, silently walked forward, tugging at Ellie's sleeve. "Ellie? Are... are you okay? There's nothing there..."
She felt terribly confused. She knew who Nessarose Thropp was, of course... Elphaba had told her plenty about her sister. But... she had been possessing her? For how long? From what Taye had said, Ozma had been sending him on missions for months... but she only remembered doing it for a couple of weeks. Did that mean that she forgot?
"I think... that Nessarose might have been controlling me," she said nervously, looking up at the group. "I don't remember being controlled... but then again, I don't seem to remember anything from the past few months."

"That would make sense," Taye said quietly. "But then... that would mean that it was really Nessarose who said that I was dead, wouldn't it? And that it was her sending me on missions after Ozma stopped." The thought sickened him... to think that he had been receiving orders from a dead woman. He didn't want to disrespect Elphaba's sister, however. "But... why would she want everyone to think that I was dead? Or for Gayelette to be thrown in... jail..."
He turned to Claire quickly, a thought sparking in his mind. "What if... this is what Nessarose was planning? All along... it all makes sense..."
He began to pace, the pieces of the puzzle lining up before him. "It can't be a coincidence that on the night that Gayelette gets broken out of prison, Nessarose just happened to bring Ozma here. If she had wanted to possess Gayelette, then the only way would be to get her completely alone somehow... and what better place than in prison?"
He pointed at Ozma. "She brought Ozma down here... but wanted to get revenge on the woman who killed her." He pointed at Morrible's lifeless body on the floor. "Then, she left Ozma's body and... I guess she went to Gayelette. But then... how did Gayelette get out? A ghost wouldn't have been able to break those bars...and I don't think that Gayelette could have..."
He turned to the group, but he only had eyes for Claire. The pain he was feeling showed through clearly. "But... why? Why would she want to possess our daughter?"

"Maybe it has something to do with Ian. You said yourself he was here...you sensed him...his magic. What if that dark magic has something to do with the dead? Or at least the dead who had impure motives? What if somehow they knew about one another? Or maybe they're somehow working together...or something..." Claire's head was spinning. It didn't all really connect, make sense. "She has my daughter..." the thought spun over and over in her head. "They have my daughter..." She shook her head, feeling tears well up in her eyes. There was anger building in her veins again. "If she weren't already dead, I'd kill her with my bare hands.." Claire growled, staring foward, clenching her fists.

"N...Nessarose?" Ellie said in response to the conversation behind her, still not taking her eyes of the silvery image in front. Her face went pale white.

"Powerful magic tends to leave traces behind," Ozma said gravely. She closed her eyes and concentrated. "I can sense it, I think... she was definitely here, and the magic she used to kill Madame Morrible still lingers. But... I don't think Nessarose is still here. She must have left... with Gayelette or not, I cannot say."
She turned to Claire anxiously. "Claire... I'm so, so sorry for what I did while Nessarose was controlling me," she said, and tears began to well up in her eyes once more. "You must have been so hurt when I said that Taye was dead, and that Gayelette was guilty... I can't believe that I would do such a thing..."

Ellie looked back, herself again, but still shaken. She ran over and comforted Claire, much as Glinda was consoling Elphaba. After a moment she looked up.
"She'll be coming after Mother. Not to hurt her, but to use her..."

Ellie looked back over her shoulder and saw the smirking face of Mombie. She started laughing softly - almost personally at Ellie...what was going on? What did SHE have to do with any of this?

"What's got you looking so troubled, my pretty?" Mombi asked, leaning against the bars of her cell, grinning wickedly. Even if she had nothing to do with it, it was great fun to see her worst enemies in such despair. "Surely you have nothing to worry about. After all, your Auntie Nessa always did look just like you. You're practically twins, I'm sure she wouldn't hurt you. Unless you're worried that she'd come steal away that tragically beautiful face of yours..." She gave a mighty cackle, then began coughing again. d**n this infernal life sentence... what she wouldn't give to cause a bit of mischief of her own.

Ellie gave a sudden, shaky intake of breath. Mombie had given voice to the fears she had not even been able to articulate to herself. Somehow, she couldn't look away. She could feel the others looking at her and Mombie. Even her mother. What...what was she feeling?

It suddenly hit Claire like a ton of bricks. "No..she won't come for Elphaba...she'll come for Glinda and Kay..." she looked at Glinda. "Boq....Boq was the one thing she could never let go...and Glinda, you're married now. And you have a child. She'll be furious..."
