Unlike the world of Harry Potter, students are not "sorted" into their houses, nor are the houses meant to reflect certain characteristics (though certain types of people tend to gravitate towards certain houses.) Rather each house is home to the four main academic departments at Shiz.
Students declare a major when applying to the University and upon acceptance are placed in the appropriate house (with the exception of the highly selective Glinda Tower which houses the Sorcery department. All those applying to Glinda Tower must list a second choice of house.) The four main towers (in the North, South, East, and West respectively) of Shiz are the central locations of the four houses. Each Tower, and the attached building houses the dorms, and main classrooms for each house. Students may attend classes in any house (except Glinda Tower) but they live in the house of their major.
NOTE: New students should post their house and major in their character profile. If you would like to be in Glinda Tower - please post your application in the Bulletin Board section. If your application is not accepted, you will be asked to choose another major.
Dillimond Tower: Natural Sciences (including, but not limited to: Chemistry, Biology, Anthropology, Mathematics, Genetics, Astronomy, Medicine)
Colors: Emerald Green and Deep Purple
Noteworthy Alumni: Dr. Dillimond (who later became a Shiz professor and for whom the House was renamed)
Located in the west of Shiz University, Dillimond Tower is home to the Natural Sciences department at Shiz. Decorated in the deparment's colors of Emerald Green, and deep Purple the tower has a dark, rich quality. Decorated with tapestries, roaring fire places and illuminated only by candles and oil lamps it's greatest amenity is its tremendous library located underground that features both useful and secret books. If the Professors ever found out the true extent of Dillimond's library the students would be banned from ever going there.
Gale Tower: Literature and History (including, but not limited to: Literary Criticism, Creative Writing, History of Oz, Creative History, also houses the Fine and Creative Arts department)
Colors: Gold and Ruby Red
Noteworthy Alumni: L. Frank Baum - former Royal Historian of Oz, for whom the House was formerly named.
Located in the South of Shiz University, and named for possibly the most famous Historical and Literary figure in Ozian history - Dorothy Gale, Gale tower is the richest and most, well, historically valuable tower in Shiz. Although it features the department's colors of gold (chosen in honor of the yellow brick road) and ruby red it is decorated in all manor of historical objects, including original Emeralds from the Emerald City, and bricks from the Yellow Brick Road. The whole tower glitters. The tower is surrounded by beautiful gardens with lots of streams and flowing water.
Emerald Tower: Politics and Governmentation (including, but not limited to: Political Science, Army of Oz Cadet training, Law)
Colors: Silver, Gold, and Emerald
Notable Alumni: Fiyero Tigalar, Nessarose Thropp, Frex Thropp, Boq
Located in the East tower of Shiz, and decorated in the signature colors of Silver and Gold and Emerald, the Emerald Tower is home to all those wishing to pursue a political career. The tower is always crisp and clean and features lots of elaborate staircases.
Glinda Tower: Sorcery
Colors: White and Blue
Notable Alumni: Glinda Upland (For whom the House was named), Elphaba Thropp
Located in the North of Shiz, and named for it's most famous graduate, Glinda tower is an airy, homey place with large arching windows, cozy fireplaces, and a stunning entrance hall and parlor. Decorated mainly in the departments signature colors of white and blue it is the smallest House at Shiz given the selective nature of accepting students. Students usually only live in this House after their first year, regardless of when they establish their Sorcery Major (they are considered on probation their first year.) However there have been some exceptions.
