"Twelve? My Goodness!" her eyes nearly popped out of her head. "I can't imagine twelve. I would've liked at least one..." for a minute she drifted into that well-known sadness but quickly dug herself out. "I mean, I have more than twelve, the orphanage. I had anywhere from ten to fifty, depending on when. A lot are adopted..."

She blushed. "Thanks. I would have been very happy with just one. But I'm almost forty now..." that stung a little. "I've just come to terms with the fact I won't ever have a daughter or son of my own..." there were a few tears in her eyes, but she tried to swallow them down. "Sorry. I have the orphans. I do. They're my children. Ellie's like my own. I shouldn't get upset about things like that..."
