Tristan walked hand in hand with Kay, a picnic basket in his other. He'd asked her to the gardens for their first date because it seemed appropriate. It was where his mom and dad had their first date, and it was a beautiful, romantic sort of spot day or night. And a packed picnic lunch seemed like just the way to spend it. Neither of them had a class for an hour on either side of the lunch hour, so they had some time to spend together. He saw a spot just up ahead where a large tree would provide some shade from the midday sun, close to a rose garden so their fragrance would flow their way. "I think this is a nice spot, don't you?"

He didn't really wait for an answer but began spreading down a blanket under the tree and unpacking the lunch: sandwiches, grapes, bits of cheese, cookies, drinks for each of them, and chips. "It looks pretty good, hmm?"

"oh, this is lovely Tristin!" Kay looked behind her - almost every girl in the school, well every POPULAR girl was hiding at a distance and trying to watch the proceedings. Kay was the "perfect" girl and Tristin was the "perfect" guy.

"You know you're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen," he beamed, pouring them each something to drink. He picked up her hand and pressed her fingers to his lips.

Kay blushed. "Well thank you" she said. "you're the prittiest...I mean handsomest boy I've ever met. We deserve each other."

"We do, don't we?" he smiled, lacing their fingers. "Would you like a bite to eat, perhaps?" he asked picking up a grape.

Kay giggled. She could never truly be the sophisticate that Gayelette would be in this situation. "Why Tristin! I think I will have one!"

He teased her as if he were about to put it into his mouth and smiled, putting it in her mouth instead.

Kay giggled with excitement. "Tristin" she said growing suddenly pensive. "Do you think Momsie...well...she said that she and Fiyero were like us - both the most popular in school, they thought they deserved each other, but they turned out not to be right for each other."

"Well, my parents were the most popular in school, like us, and they did end up together. They're very happy, and they had Gayelette and I. They desereved each other, and they did end up together." he sat up on his knees and leaned forward toward her. "I think we're far more like them. Times have changed, and we do deserve each other." he leaned forward a little farther, reaching his hand out and cupping her cheek, pressing his lips gently to hers.

Kay almost burst out of her skin. Contrary to popular oppinion it was her first kiss. She pulled away for a moment overwhelmed, and then leaped on Tristin throwing him to the ground and kissing him passionately. "We understand each other. I'd like you even if we were both still in diapers and didn't know what beauty or popularity was. Like the way father loved mother all those years..."

"Well...I don't think we'd know to do this if we were still in diapers," he chuckled, wrapping his hand around tendrils of her hair and pulling her face back down to his.

"I like it when you play with my hair" she said in between kisses. She heard some giggling and turned around. "I think we're being watched" she said.

"Do you care?" he asked, fingers still stroking through her soft locks. "People will talk. We might as well give them a real story to tell..."

"Oh I don't mind them talking. People have always talked about me. I just didn't want to put on a show today, for once. I just want to be with you." She kissed him hard. She liked this!
