"Well don't worry. I don't sneak up on people. I'm not the Wizard"

"You just think I want to be..." she thought but didn't say it. "Well, that's good," was her actual reply. Then she diverted back to Ellie. "Are you sure you're ok now?"

Elphie interrupted Ellie. "If you don't want me to think that - then prove me wrong" she stared Gayelette in the eye. Yes, Elphie could read thoughts to some extent - when they were as loud as Gayelettes!

She glared. She'd read her thoughts. "You're sneaky. You know that? I never gave you any reason to think it in the first place. You came up with that all on your own!" She did a hand gesture that one would swear she'd stolen straight from Glinda in her days at Shiz, but of course, Gayelette had never seen Glinda at Shiz...

"Gayelette. I don't think ill of you. But look at your actions? You were so quick to assume those boys were sent from the Nome King. For crying out loud! What would you think of you if you were in our position?"

"That I'm a kid!" she stamped her foot. "Geeze! Can't you give me half a break? I don't know anything! I wasn't even born then. The fact that I'm here right now is by some bad decisions--not only on my part before you go pointing fingers--and sheer chance!"

Elphie looked at Claire. "You're right Gayelette. I don't blame you for aging yourself. But I can see peoples hearts sometimes. It's a gift, or curse I've aquired over the years. And you want power and immortality. It's ok - everyone does to some extent. BUt you're not a two year old anymore. You're a seventeen year old with more of a fair share of magical powers, and no ability or desire to control them. Those boys were children too. Are they any less responsible for their motives?"

"I do want to control them! That's why I asked to be in the program! And you told me no. You told me I'd never see the sorcery program because I was going to turn into some power hungry something or the other. I wanted to learn about whatever natural gift I have, because obviously I have one. And you said no. And then I thought, well...my mother rules Quaddling, and if some day I might want to take her place, I need to know about government. And you told me no. Because I was power hungry. And that I could just learn chemistry!" she was screaming with a bit of a growl. "If you think it's so easy to grow up in a day, why don't you just try it? Tristan's not fairing a whole lot better, he just happens to have a far different temperment than I do." she pointed at her brother, clumsily dancing with his girlfriend, basically oblivious to the whole sitation.

"Gayelette! Be quiet!" Instantly the girl calmed down. "I never said half of the things you're implying. No. It's NOT easy to grow up in a day, but like it or not you did. Do you think it's easy dealing with being immortal? Or GREEN! No. But Ellie and I HAD to. And now you do too. And whoevers fault it is, you are still responsible for your actions. And I won't let someone still acting like a two year old brat who only wants her way all the time deal with dangerous magic. You forget, Glinda had just as much of a say as I did in the matter. But I NEVER said you were a power hungry something or other. Almost no one is accepted into Glinda tower as a first year - so you're not recieving some undue punishment. Secondly, have you ever even spoken to your mother about being the next Governor? The fact is your motives were not pure as much as you're crying now that they were. You never even told your mother what you had done. And you forget, I know thoughts. You want to be loved and fawned over. The truth is your mother spoiled you terribly - and if something doesn't change you won't just be a confused kid, you'll be a danger though you may not see it."

"Ok! I'm a brat! I didn't say I wasn't a brat! I'm working on it. That doens't change overnight either!" she bit the inside of her lip. "I'm here. I'm here talking instead of just leaving. I actually cared that someone stabbed Ellie. I was trying to be nice to you. I am trying to be nice to everyone!"

"Gayelette, are you?" Elphie knelt down and got eye to eye with her, being tender and gentle. "You only came over after Polly got you. Gayelette, you don't have to be a perfect princess to be loved and fulfilled. Ask Glinda. Ask your mother! If you're working on something just come to us and ask for help. I'm glad you're trying not to be a brat - but you can't magically do it on your own." Elphie looked at Claire -this was her daughter. It was time for her to step up to the place. Where oh where was Glinda?

"Well, I was kind of in shock..." she sighed, "and i've been talking to Polly about it. You can ask her. I've been trying. I'm a little scared of you."

Elphaba laughed. "Don't worry. No matter what I do, everyone is. Sound familiar?"

"Gayelette, maybe this isn't the time and place. Let's...tomorrow. The four of us will sit down, hmm? We'll have tea, talk."
