"Really?" Ellie said, suprised. "I would think it would make you seem more intelligent..."

"People don't like intelligence. People like an air-headed blonde who dresses nicely."

"I don't think that's true...well, maybe it is a little. No one's ever liked my intelligence" said Ellie. "But that just goes hand in hand with what I was talking about. About popularity."

"To be popular you have to act like several things: 1. you're not as smart as you really are. People like to think that you're dumb because they think they have the advantage over you that way. 2. You don't care about your popularity. They like to think you don't know everyone loves you, and you're just naturally that charismatic. 3. You wake up out of bed looking fabulous. You have to always look put together, and never let on how much time you put into your appearance. It's all a little deceitful, but it's the facts."

"I couldn't ever do that" said Ellie. "It's just...not me." She looked at Claire. "Why are you being so open with me? You know, if I wasn't the kind of person you think I am I could use what you just told me against you. Why do you trust me so much?"

"Well, I tend to think of myself as a pretty good judge of character."

Ellie smiled. "Better than most. Hope I prove worth it and I...don't get you into trouble."

"Eh. Even if you do...people tend to overlook a lot of things to for...who knows why.."

"I'm not so sure about that" said Ellie. "I've found people tend to hold on to things for a long time."

"Eh maybe...my family still buries stuff from our history because they're so worried about people finding out 'who we are.' Who we are...are a bunch of stuck up rich snobs who happened to have made money in a craft. They think it's trained because it's 'new money.' Who cares? I'm here! This place is prestigious, and my brother and I are both here." she shook her head. "People place far too much influence on who we are on the outside instead of who we are on the inside. And you're a good person on the inside...I can see it."

Ellie smiled. "Tell me about your family? What craft do they do?"

"Glassblowers. For some reason ashamed of it...they just call themselves 'artisans' and 'designers,' because they say it sounds less poor. My mom met my dad when she went away to school. He was there actually teaching....not studying. They were the same age, but he was so talented they gave him a professor's position. They didn't pay him much, but he was just happy to be doing something he loved. He and his brother grew up doing it, and mom fell is love with an artist. Her parents were furious with her for marrying some poor, non-Gilkinese boy. He taught her how to blow glass, and she taught him how to market the craft. She mostly keeps books and makes bookings. He did all of the work for the green glass panes and sculptures in the Emerald City..."

Ellie's face turned white. "Claire...you're not related to Turtle Heart are you...?"

"Yes, but if my parents head me say it they'd keel over. He technically was my uncle, my dad's brother. He had kind of some...rendezvous that were less than 'Gilikin' worthy. Of course...he was Quaddling...like my dad...who also does his best to cover that up. Like I said, my family, hush hush. But from what i've heard he could have been something special...had more talent than my dad for glassblowing...and they say he had the gift of magic...which is why I always thought I'd love to study it. It's in my blood."

"Have you ever heard the story that Turtle Heart was the real father of N...The Wicked Witch of the East?" Said Ellie, nervous...
