"I had never met her personally until Ellie became my roommate. She was raised at Glinda's orphanage." She smiled at Ellie, eyeing her to make sure she wasn't saying more than she wanted. "And Glinda has been very kind to her, invited us up to the City. I had been there several times before because my parents were glassblowers, arcitects, who helped make the emerald city what it is today. It's always beautiful, no matter how many times I've been back..."

Ellie felt, well in control. And maybe even beautiful. She still wasn't sure how she felt about Taye. Deep down she still wasn't quite ready to accept that a boy could actually... like her! She kept thinking how wonderful he looked with Claire.
"I'd never been to the Emerald City before" Ellie said. "Claire fit right in."
Oh! Politics! Don't get her started! She hated them! At least what they had become...

"You know I really want some punch. Ellie, you wanna come with?" She didn't really wait for an answer she just kind of tugged at her sleeve and expected her to follow. "Do you like him?" She said kind of teasingly.

As Claire and Ellie walked away giggling, Kay was left dancing awkwardly with Taye.
"I've never been to the Emerald City," she said, mysticated by this person. Living in the Emerald City... going to balls hosted by Glinda the Good herself? It was like a dream come true. "What's it like?"

"Like who?" Ellie said. "Taye? Oh no... I don't know... I wasn't even thinking about it" she said.
Ellie took some punch. "Lemons, and melons and pears. Oh my!"

Taye nodded as Claire and Ellie left, then smiled at Kay's question. This girl was so sweet, so innocent... why on earth was she staying with someone with Mombi? She must have been her niece, or great-niece, something like that. She seemed to be fairly familiar with Claire and Ellie... he wondered how much they knew about her.
"Well... there are all kinds of things you wouldn't find elsewhere in Oz. Palaces, museums, huge buildings... and everything is grand and green and bustling with life. It's really an amazing place... nowhere else like it in all of Oz. Maybe someday you'll get to go yourself."

Kay's face fell. "Oh, I don't know. Mombi doesn't like big cities, and she'd never allow me to go by myself..."

She got herself a cup and had a sip. "You sure? He's looking at you like he wishes you were an ice cream cone he could devour in one bite!" She giggled.

"Hmm... that's a shame," Taye said quietly, secretly thinking about how odd it was that someone's relative would be so controlling of them. Perhaps she and Mombi weren't related at all? But surely Kay wasn't choosing this lifestyle... even an outsider like Taye could see how unhappy she was with Mombi. But things like slavery weren't allowed in Oz. He'd talk to Ellie and Claire about it later... maybe they knew something.

She knew she had embarressed Ellie, so she hushed as they reapparoached Taye and Kay. "Did you miss us?" She said jokingly.

Ellie sensed something. Was that a rumbling she heard? No, it couldn't be. She tucked her key necklace back into her dress - the necklace she always wore, and joined back in the dancing.

"Of course we did," Taye said, grinning as the two rejoined the circle. He hesitated for a moment, then teasingly added "Did you?"

"Yes sir." She grinned, a bit cattily now, flirtaceous as ever. Ellie had said she didn't want him. It didn't mean she was necissarily going after him, but it meant she could at least be a flirt.

Ellie laughed it all off. She had no idea of all the intrecate social cues and things at play. She was just having a good time, and hoping that nothing would happen to upset it.

Taye smiled a bit at Claire's tone. It was usually pretty easy to tell when people were flirting with him. While he tried not to be too thingyy about it, he did secretly like the attention. And while he was flattered that one of the most popular girls in the school seemed to be developing an interest in him, he was also a bit off-put that Ellie wasn't interested at all. He decided to try again... it couldn't hurt.
"You seem to be having a good time," Taye said teasingly to Ellie. "I told you so..."
