"So it's all true..." Not that she'd doubted Az, but to hear it from another set of ears. Then another thought crossed Claire's mind, Gayelette. "Nessa has no real power of her own...Gayelette's power must be far stronger than any of us thought...to really, truly do such a thing. Perhaps Nessa had somehow found what spell to use, but it was Gayelette who did the casting..." Was her daughter a magical protege?

Elphaba looked at Claire incredulously. In as gentle a way as possible she said: "You're just now figuring this out? Your daughter is incredably talented. That's why we were so wary around her - a child with that much power, who doesn't know her own strength can be dangerous - completely unintentionally. Glinda and I were never trying to gang up on her, or brand her as evil, we were trying to make sure she didn't hurt herself, or anybody else."

It flabberghasted her. She'd known Gayelette had natural talent, yes. And she'd known she was a wonderful mimic to be able to perform the spell, but to create a spell of her own out of nothing...with that much power. Why hadn't they accepted her into the magic school? Why hadn't they tried to teach her, coach her, help her use her power for good? Why had they instead shunned her and sent her into evil? It didn't make sense!

Elphaba could sense what Claire was thinking. She went on. "We didn't accept her in Glinda tower THIS year. Keep in mind, most students aren't accepted their first year. We fully intended to admit her eventually. We didn't want her playing with her powers too soon. I think we were hoping that she'd let it go for a little while. Plus, we couldn't reward her for using her magic inappropriately. She had to learn first and foremost that there are consequences for using magic without thinking. We couldn't say "good job, come on in and be one of the most powerful, popular students on campus as a result of your misuse of magic." There are things about magic it's more important to learn besides just how to cast a spell...
But I think the problem was that Gaylette was still a two year old in many ways, and she decided to sulk the way a two year old would - insist we were being mean and unfair. But when you're a seventeen year old it manifests itself much differently..."
She looked at Glinda imploringly.

"I have to agree. In many ways Kay was the same way...only her spell helped her to grow a little. Kay's was more in innocence than in temperament. I worry now that the spell has changed that might change as well..."

"I...I think it did..." said Polly hesitantly, but secretly, happy to be on Glinda and Elphaba's team this time around. "She seemed, stronger, smart with a bit of a temper - more like what I've heard about Nessarose...but still with a bit of Boq's sweetness, and stubbornness" she added.

"I suppose there are worse qualities she could have inherited from Nessa..." Glnda said, her heart dropping just hearing the words come out of her mouth.

"Like... what?" Asked Polly. "After all, we don't know the full extent..."

"I think she means at least she didn't get the full tempter of Nessa...a bit...you said..."

"She might have. I only saw her for a moment. I just mean we should be careful..."
